Problem
Contractors needed a way to show homeowners how real roofing and siding would look on their house, and a direct path from that choice to an order. The client's catalog wasn't built for homeowners, and was missing some of the data an experience like this needs.
Approach
We designed the full flow, from project setup through homeowner approval to the order. Alongside it, I did a light analysis of the catalog to find the missing data points, and some changes came out of that work.
The team had committed early to real-time rendering, which never looked convincing, and contractor research showed quality mattered more than speed. I brought in Figma Make prototyping to make the case for generative-AI rendering instead.
Outcome
- Prototyping in Figma Make took a day or two off each sprint review.
- The flow was designed end to end, including the step that turns an approved design into an order.
- The client held course on real-time rendering, and the team added an AI render on top to recover quality.
What I learned
I let the rendering question stay open too long. By the time the research and prototypes reached the client's decision-maker, much of the real-time build was done. Next time, I'll test the riskiest assumptions before the build commits.
My role
I led up to three designers from first research to the final sprint, and designed the flow myself, from project setup to the order.
